Transport Chairs or Wheelchairs ?
Geraldton Coral Coast Mobility.
Many people have asked should I buy a patient transport chair or a manual wheelchair?
The difference is in the weight of the chair and the size of the rear wheels.
A transport chair looks like this :
The transport chair is ideal for when a carer needs to push a friend or family member when out and about at the shops or medical appointments. Transport chairs are lighter.
And a wheelchair looks like this:
The wheelchair is ideal when the person in the chair need to push themselves using the handrails on the side of the larger rear wheels. These chairs are a few kgs heavier due to the wheels.
A primary difference between the transporter and the wheelchair is also that the transport has a handbrake on the handles for the carer so these chairs are ok when climbing or descending gentle slopes. Both chairs also have park brakes, but the wheelchair is only suited to level ground as it has no handbrakes so the user must control the chair with the handrails on the wheels.
Both types of chair are available with different seat widths to suit the individual.
Both are a available in a variety of colours.
Some models can be fitted with eleveated legrest or stump supports.
